The first from a customer for whom we simply carried out a Megaflush:

I'd like to publicly thank Gordon of 4-Tech for his help last week.
Some history, my 2005 Auto TDV6 HSE had done a pretty high mileage when I got it. It had been services regularly but the auto box isn't among the items for oil changes as it is a 'sealed for life' unit. A some time after I got the car, several thousand miles, I noticed that the revs were fluctuating when doing a constant speed, even under cruise control. I was worried enough to pop into the Chesterfield LR dealership en route to make sure I wasn't harming the gearbox by driving the car. They gave me the reassuring explanation that it needs a double flush but no you won't ruin it. Just get it done asap.
So I took it to my local LR specialist here in Cardiff, HBH up in Caerphilly. To be fair to them they said it would be the first one they had done but were confident about tackling the job. I sourced the Shell oil and a new sump pan which has the filter in it.
HBH duly double flushed the gearbox but noticed that the new drain plug wept at bit when the gearbox got hot, so had to drain the oil again to find out why it leaked. It transpired the 'o' ring wasn't seating correctly. All done and I had no problems at all, and the rev fluctuations had miraculously disappeared. I was a happy bunny.
Spool on 6 months and I started to notice that the car juddered when exiting roundabouts which had a hill to go up. I.E. the torque converter or gearbox clutches were slipping under load. The feeling is like driving over a load of shallow rumble strips. The way to stop it was to take your foot off the accelerator and then accelerate again slowly.
Interesting it didn't do it when accelerating away from a standing start, say traffic lights.
I feared the worst that I probably had glycol from the rad in the auto oil. The disaster side of this is that the whole gearbox has to be rebuilt! Not cheap.
I happened to be near Peterborough and I gave Gordon at 4-tech a call to ask his advice. He suggested I come in and he would test the oil for glycol, which would take 1.5 hours to return a result. This I duly did. I'm glad to say the result came back as a negative, no glycol present. Gordon says that finding glycol is rare. What to next, well I opted for the Megaflush which takes all of 20 mins, as Gordon was quietly confident that my problems would go away.
Sure enough a quick road test showed no judder and I returned to Cardiff in a car that didn't judder once and if possible changed gear even more smoothly than before.
So thank you Gordon, you were spot on with your prognosis.
My advice to anybody with a high mileage auto box is don't double flush but go for a mega flush as then you can be confident that you HAVE change ALL of he oil. With more an more D3's achieving high mileages this sealed for life is becoming a standing joke. ZF who make the boxes give the oil a seven year life max on ordinary cars, Audis, BMWs and the like, but with the extra weight, 2.7 tonnes of the D3 and the real likely hood that the car will have been used to tow then changing the oil round about 150,000 miles or five years is something that should be done.
I would now recommend that a Megaflush is the only real way to ensure that the oil has been changed fully.
Obviously enough of the old oil had remained and had contaminated the new oil.
I have wasted two lots of expensive Shell M1375.4, 12 litres in total.
So thank you Gordon, next time I'll drive to Wisbech first as will be a lot cheaper in the long run!!

Secondly: This customer had a Megaflush carried out plus we fitted an EGR blanking system and a new Intercooler to engine air intake hose:

Gordon,

just thought I'd let you know that, despite the appalling weather on the way home last Thursday, the difference in performance feel, especially pick-up from standstill and 50+ mph is very noticeable, but the best transformation is the low speed driveability - not a shuffle or vibration to be felt anywhere through the transmission at all.

1/4 mile long 1 in 3 gradient at 30 mph and light throttle on entry with steady increase in torque demand - not a judder - Brilliant !

Fuel consumption averaged 28.8 mpg for a just under 400 mile round trip the following weekend - a significant decrease in consumption from the 23 - 24 we were used to !

So, in summary, she's now faster, more economical, quieter (much less combustion noise), and smoother shifting.
